Highfield Utd Reserves 1

Sunday 26 April ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

I told the lads before this game that we needed an early goal if possible to settle any nerves – and we got it, thanks to Simon Farrell who scored from a very tight angle. I felt we were much the better side, which was good because Clokey was carrying an injury to his ankle.

The one thing that continues to bother me is the number of chances we continue to waste. Joe, Doug and Wilko should all have added to our tally! Doug did eventually add another to make it 2-0 at half time.

We knew another goal or two would seal it, but as usual we go and concede, to allow the visitors back in to the game. Joe had a good chance but fired over. A foul on Simon was punished as he got up to dispatch the free kick to extend our lead again.

Again we wasted chances – Perry, Perry Jnr and Barker all braking from midfield, only to spurn the chances. Simon then broke free down the middle and caused mayhem, was brought down in the area, and slotted home the penalty himself to complete his hat trick. Dougie then added his second to round off a 5-1 win. MOM went to Perry snr, for his non stop work rate.

Bliby Reserves 2

Ashford Cavaliers Reserves 2

Wednesday 22 April ’09report from Sandyacres

Tonight’s hosts went into the game seeking revenge from the recent cup final clash between us both. The game started evenly, with both sides trying to knock the ball around, it became an open contest. The best chances fell to Duncan and Doug – who perhaps should have given us the lead.

We found ourselves 0-1 when Bliby’s mid fielder simply walked through unchallenged to slot in the corner! HT came and went with us missing chances, as usual. We then found ourselves 0-2 down as we got caught on the break.

A change of formation and personnel didn’t seem to change much, although we still created chances without taking them. With just over ten minutes remaining, Duncan scrambled home to get us back in the game. We then gambled – pushed everyone forward in search of the equaliser we needed – and the gamble paid off when Doug touched home during a total goal mouth mess! Just three minutes remaining, we had salvaged a valuable point. Well done to all for not giving up until the end.

Sunday 19 April ’09 – Dale reports from Mersham

After last weeks disaster we had an early chance to put things right. I told the players exactly what I wanted and to be fair, most produced. We played the better football, although it was still too long at times, and we created several chances. Yet we found ourselves 0-1 when their only real attack ended in them scoring.

Credit to our lads as we kept battling. Tim was unlucky with an overhead kick which hit the crossbar. The ever reliable Duncan broke the off side trap to finally make one of our chances count as we levelled it up.

The second half was much the same, with several chances going begging – until Dunc struck again to give us the lead. Stupidly, we stopped playing once we had the lead and paid the price when Kev misjudged a lob forward and the striker poked it past Clokey, who had played well.

The game finished 2-2. After saying it for eight weeks, the players now know why I’m on the look out for a goal scorer!

No effort, no commitment, no result! You only get out what you put in – in this case nothing!

Congratulations to the visitors who ran out worthy winners.

Division 4 Cup Final

Sunday 05 April ’09 – Dale reports from Reachfields

We started this final as slight favourites, although with Bliby unbeaten since December, we knew this would be tough. The opening minutes were evenly contested. Bliby had a goal ruled out due to off side earlier in the move, and Perry shot from out side the area forcing a good save from the keeper.

Soon after, Matty Gomez was brought down on the edge of the area. He took the free kick himself and punished them, curling into an unguarded net. It wasn’t long before one nil became two nil as Gomez again cut in from their left side and let fire.

At that point we never looked in trouble – until I got my positioning all wrong and got lobbed at my far post, 2-1 at the break.

The second half was similar to the first, with few chances. The one chance Bliby did get they slotted home to level the score. I thought there was only going to be one winner though, and I was proved right when Marmite Robson nodded home from our only decent corner of the match!

Well done to all – Ashford Cavaliers Reserves, Division 4 Cup Winners ‘09

Prince Albert 0

Sunday 29 March ’09 – Dale reports from Goldwyn

Part two of this double fixture was an improvement, and an early chance to get our first defeat out of our system, and we did. We seemed more interested and knew we would have to battle for everything.

We enjoyed the luxury of an early lead when Marmite scored, adding to his ever growing tally this term. We were more in control as both teams tired and we made sure of the three points when Jo Wilcox hit a thunder bolt – a fine finish from one of our many improved players. Although the visitors hit the bar, I never felt we were in danger of losing again.

My MOM goes to Gavin Baker, who has been helping out the first team, and made an impressive return to this squad.

Prince Albert 2

Sunday 29 March ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

Albert arrived at Golwyn for the start of a ‘double header’ as we looked to ease the fixture pile up. I got the team selection wrong and I take full responsibility for it – and we paid for it. Although fair play to Albert who fought for every loose ball, and normally won it!

We never really got going and by the time we realised we were in a game it was too late. We had too many players who never really performed. We reached half time at 0-0, but early in the second half Prince Albert took the lead with a scrappy goal, the sort I thought we had stopped conceding!

We pressed in an attempt to level things up, only to get caught forward and concede a splendid second strike. My MOM goes to Mark, one of the few to turn up, and his little outburst at the final whistle proves how much he wants to win. I live and learn – sorry.

Ashford Spartans 0

Sunday 22 March ’09 – Dale reports from Goldwyn

We welcomed Ashford Spartans to Goldwyn with an 8-2 thumping of Highfield still fresh in their minds. Again we helped out the Club by sending a couple of players to the first team – this actually makes my selection easier.

We started very well, playing some lovely football, with Barker and Perry running things in midfield. Hopefully two of our strikers got their misses out of the way before the final – Stu missing two and Dougie one – as we should have been three up! However, Stu did break the dead lock on the stroke of half time, probably with his most difficult chance.

The second half, we were not so much in control, although never really looked in trouble. Tim, Aidie, Kevin and Mark making sure of it. I feel Spartans are the best attacking side we have faced, and we made them look very ordinary.

We held on for a 1-0 victory, with Barker earning my MOM for a very impressive display. We march on, as I said before the game – many cup final places to play for.

Mersham Reserves 1

Division 4 League Cup Semi Final

Sunday 15 March ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

We welcomed Mersham Reserves to Goldwyn with a place in the cup final at stake. We were to start with two missing through work, which meant yet another position for Mark and yet another faultless display.

We started the better and took the lead through a Matt Gomez header. We doubled our lead when Mark flicked on a corner for Dougie to poke home. We spoke about not conceding in the second half – but as with last week, we let ourselves down to let the visitors back in the game 2-1.

Then a piece of first class management, making two changes and moving a couple of players about to catch Mersham on the break. It worked a treat with Reece and Matt sealing our path to Hythe.

MOM went to Aidie in central defence – never put a foot wrong and now looking very comfortable.

Park Farm 1

Sunday 08 March ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

We welcomed Park Farm to Goldwyn as second faced first place. We faced the challenge with a bare eleven as several were released to assist the first team squad.

We began quite slowly but soon took control of the game. Doug ‘Marmite’ Robson (you either love him or hate him!) raced clear of the Farm defence to score – twice – to give us a 2-0 lead. Although the visitors kept pressing, they were frustrated by Mr Reliable, Kevin, Aidie and old man Tim, with Clokie solid behind them. We remained 2-0 at the break.

Park Farm kept at it, and we conceded very early in the half to leave the game on a real knife edge. More pressure from Farm was dealt with well, as they came close to bringing the score level but never quite had their shooting boots on! With 15 to go, an intelligent ball from Marmite found Stu Reakes, who slotted home. That’s how it finished, 3-1, and we go top. Still lots to be done tho!

MOM goes to Doug, who added work rate to his goals this week. My thanks go to Gavin, Joe, Wilko and Matty Robins who answered the call to help the First team out – thanks lads, true CLUB spirit.

Wye Monarchs Reserves 2

Sunday 01 March ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

With second playing third, we knew this would be tough. Although we blew them away inside the first twenty minutes, racing in to a three goal lead. Simon with the first from a corner from the returning Stuart. Young Reece popped up to poke home after good work from Simon again to make it two. Perry put Stuart through to make it three.

Then we had our usual mad five minutes, conceding two goals. We held together through to half time. We had a chat at the break, identified some problems, and sorted them.

In the second half we seemed more comfortable. Kevin Friend rolled back the years, playing up front and scoring twice. Our shape looked better with Kevin up front, with his experience and ability to hold the ball up.

Only one candidate for man of the match – and that was Simon Farrell, putting in a first class display – let’s hope it’s not a week too early. Mr reliable also had a faultless game at the back, yet again playing in two positions and playing well in both. We march on.

Charing Reserves 0

Sunday 15 Feb ’09Dale reports from Goldwyn

We welcomed Charing Reserves to Goldwyn as we looked to continue our unbeaten league run this season. I believe for a very long spell during the first half, we played our best football so far since the campaign began.

Mr Reliable, aka Mark Stringer, proved his worth again. This time playing in yet another position, clearly able to play anywhere along the back line. Perry gave us an early lead, and Dougie soon made it 2, thanks to a flick on by Mr Reliable. By half time, Doug had completed his hat trick to make it 4-0.

The less we say about the second half the better. Matty made it 5-0, and that’s about it really! We need to improve if we are to challenge for the title. MOM went to Dougie – although he needs to start scoring against the tougher sides – starting next week against Mersham Reserves, and then Wye Monarchs Reserves the following week.

Cavaliers win 3-0 on penalties

Division 4 League Cup 1/4

Sunday 08 Feb ’09Dale reports from Willesborough

Off to Willesbrough we went as we continued our journey to Hythe. Our preparations were not helped by the ‘no show’ of goal keeper Clokie, so up I stepped to do my bit in goal – funny how things turn out eh!

I was impressed with the quality of football played by the hosts, yet I was more impressed with the way we adapted to a different formation, implemented by myself for tactical reasons. This was a game I never felt we would lose, even when we were one nil down. We stepped up in the second half, and a brace from Chris Barker put us 2-1 in front. Some slack marking from a corner allowed Spartans to level the game 2-2.

Into extra time we went. Both sides were starting to tire, and I feel we looked the more likely to score and win the game. However, as is the case so often, we missed several chances to seal it. So now for penalties – well what can I say? Spartans went first, saved – scored – saved – scored – saved – scored – 3-0 win on penalties! Anyone wanting to hear me talk some more about the penalty saves, feel free to ask!

Troggs 2

Sunday 08 Feb ’09Big Man reports from Goldwyn

Again, as has been the case so often, we took to the field struggling for players, with just a bare eleven to face a side currently second in the league! We started quite sloppy, giving the ball away, and were perhaps guilty of over play at the back. The Troggs early lead came from a lack of concentration – a half clearance coming straight back at us, finding three unmarked players in the box – a simple chance easily dispatched!

The remainder of the half saw us pretty much dominate, creating several chances and the visitors keeper pulling off some good saves. Efforts were even cleared off the line as we pushed, yet not able to find a way through.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. The lads playing some positive football and making chances. However, poor finishing and good defending saw our efforts go unrewarded. The result may have been different had Alex not been brought down when one on one with the keeper on the edge of the box.

We continued to press the 10 men of Troggs, although lost some threat when Steve Adz had to come off injured. The second Troggs goal came as we were pushing for the equaliser – getting caught forward and leaving Cookie and Tommy with no chance.

This was a hard fought game on a poor surface. A little more luck and we would have got a deserved point from the game. My thanks go to all for their efforts. MOM went to young Billy, who played for the first time in 4 months after injury, and showed his potential in a near faultless display.

Brabourne 1

Ashford Cavaliers Reserves 2

Sunday 01 Feb ’09Dale reports from Sellindge

A game at last, as we travelled to Sellindge to face Brabourne who defeated us recently in the Sheber cup. With a few missing, we welcomed the news that the First team game had been postponed.

I said to the lads before the game that we would need to match them for effort and commitment, and hopefully the rest would take care of itself. The first half was well contested with both sides creating chances, and we maybe should have gone ahead when Wilko had a chance from five yards out.

The second half was much the same, but we found ourselves 0-1 down early on. As frustrating as it was, we still showed 100% effort. The game went from end to end – the hosts searching for a second and ourselves looking for the equaliser – and boy did we leave it late! With just three minutes remaining Dougie headed home from a corner to draw level.

I would have settled for a point then, but the lads had other ideas. With just seconds remaining, Chris Barker reacted first in a mad scramble to slot the winner home. Well done to all, but lets keep our feet on the ground!

MOM went to Cookie, who showed his class, which has never been in doubt. A mention to Dunc for giving us balance on the left.

Market Hotel 7

Sunday 25 Jan ’09Big Man reports from Goldwyn

On a wet and windy day we welcomed current Champions and league leaders Market Hotel to Goldwyn. Despite some good passages of play, the game was quite one sided. The pace of the visitors forward Dan Cornell along with their experience in midfield caused us problems all day!

We went in at the break 1-4 down, the only consolation coming from Kev Friend, although we did have chances to reduce the deficit. In the second half we played better, creating more chances and passing the ball well in terrible conditions. We actually only lost the second half 2-3 – thanks to goals from Woody and Perry! Final score being 3-7.

No matter how much I dress this up, we were well and truly beaten today. MOM went to Tommy. Without him, the score may well have been double! A mention also for Dunc who is adapting well to yet another position with the attitude that is so typical of him! Matty G also doing well out wide.

Probably a game to forget as we focus on getting points from the coming games as we prepare for our struggle for survival.

Bromley Green 4

Sunday 18 Jan ‘09Big Man reports from Goldwyn.

After more than three months off, we again took to the field at Goldwyn against our old adversaries Bromley Green. With the Reserve game off I had the luxury of having subs for this one! We began brightly with skipper Pat Law smacking the bar from a free kick. Had we shown more quality in front of goal, we may well have been three up before our visitors had woken up!

It was, however, Green who took the lead as a wind assisted corner found the net. They soon doubled their lead when two defenders collided to gift the forward a chance he calmly took.

The second half we battled well, with MOM Kevin Friend heading home from close range, after meeting a Paul Allan assist from a Steve Adz corner. Green then made it 1-3 before Wilko poached from close range to make it 2-3. Green then sealed the match 2-4 with a well taken goal.

The result of this one was not a fair reflection, a draw being a fairer outcome. The difference between the sides being the finishing in front of goal. Top displays go to Friend, Allan and Cheesy. A thank you to the Reserve lads for helping out, and to Chris and Alex who performed well on their debut.

Division 4 Cup

Sunday 21st December – Dale reports from Goldwyn

We welcomed Highfield to Goldwyn for the divisional cup clash – when we met in a league clash recently we were lucky to come away with the win! We began well, passing the ball and keeping possession. However, as before, we relaxed and conceded from a free kick, given away by myself!

We did eventually score through Doug Robson, returning to the starting eleven.

The second half was much the same, with our lads being the better side, yet missing too many chances! We eventually took the lead through Doug again, and then took control as Doug completed his hat trick – his second of the season.

We made it hard for ourselves – of course – by letting in a second. Matty G wrapped it up though with a cool finish – the only time he never tried to break the net…

Dale was MOM because of some key saves, and because I can! Well done to all, a quarter final awaits.

Sheber Cup

Sunday 07th December – Dale reports from Sellindge

After a break in games due to the weather we finally travelled to face Brabourne in the Sheber Cup – a cup we should have expected to do well in. I say ‘should’ – but quite simply we didn’t bother turning up! I only ever ask for 100% but sadly hardly anyone offered that today.

I’m not into mentioning names as we are a team, so therefore we should all take a little responsibility, including myself. The pitch was not great, but it was the same for both sides.

We found ourselves 0-3 down before we even got going. Little changed after half time either, although Matty G gave us a goal and we also hit the post a little earlier

Hopefully some lessons learned, especially if we want a trip to Hythe in the League Cup or promotion – neither of which are guaranteed. MOM went to Tim Bourne.

Ruckinge 2

Sunday 16th November – Dale reports from Goldwyn

As we welcomed Ruckinge to Goldwyn, I told the players before the game that today was the day to prove they are as good as they think they are! A look at the Ruckinge line up was enough to know this would not be easy – but credit where credit is due – we put in a fine display. I feel we never honestly looked like losing the game and feel we were always in control. We passed the ball around with confidence and made a good side look very ordinary.

We went 1-0 up after good running from Wilko allowed Fred Ruby a clear run and shot on goal. Skipper Kevin then conceded a penalty to make it 1-1 after an unfortunate hand ball. Our midfield then took hold of the game with Chris Barker outstanding (MOM) and Perry supporting well. Half time saw us 2-1 up thanks to a Matty G run and thunderbolt finish.

The second half was more of the same with Robbins, Mark S, Kevin, Tim/Joe all solid at the back, as well as Clokey in goal – playing again after his hand injury – never put a foot or hand wrong! We seemed to cruise to a 4-1 lead thanks to a penalty from Matty G and a superb free kick from Barker. A late Robbins foul resulted in another penalty as we won the game 4-2.

Aldington 1

Sunday 09th November – Big Man reports from Goldwyn.

After the Kennington game I asked the lads for more passion when playing football on a Sunday morning – and that’s exactly what they gave me, and more! As we welcomed Aldington to Goldwyn, it was always going to be tough. I can’t even remember ever beating them in a league clash!

With Timmy G suspended and the ever growing injury list increasing, it was a new look back four that took to the field. Despite this, we started very bright, and bossed the game for forty minutes. However, a moments lapse in concentration saw us go a goal down after not tracking our men back.

The spirits were high at half time and we continued playing good passing football, putting our visitors under pressure all over the park. We were rewarded when Andy Davies stole the ball in midfield and set up Jake, who tapped in to bring us level. We continued to press Aldington with some impressive stuff, and two curling efforts from Fred Ruby both found the top corner to secure our first points of the season. The margin could have been greater had it not been for the heroics of the Aldington keeper.

MOM went to Davies for a fine display, although everyone deserves credit for stepping up and showing what they are capable of. Other mentions go to Steve Adz, Ben Forbes and Dunc – all playing out of position and doing so without concern. Matty G and Cookie made their Premier debuts for the season and didn’t look out of place at all. Matt causing problems with his pace and Cookie dealing well with the attacking threat Aldington have.

Could this be the turning point in our season? With this level of passion and effort, I don’t see why not. Well done lads.

Highfield United Reserves 2

Ashford Cavaliers Reserves 3

Sunday 09th November – Skip comments from the Ridge

The Reserves set out to continue their fine start against an experienced Highfield side at the Ridge, and found the form book thrown out after just 2 minutes. A combination of errors, along with some clearly still asleep, allowed the hosts to slot home from a sloppy build up. We began to panic and show signs of frustration, which simply played into the hands of Highfield. The simple things were suddenly quite the opposite!

It got worse, with the ball given up cheaply in the middle followed by two poor attempted clearances, Highfield doubled their lead with a very well taken effort, giving Dale no chance in goal. For whatever reason, too many seemed off the pace and the effect on the team display was obvious to see. Jo had a glorious chance before the break, but failed to convert as Highfield went in worthy leaders at the interval.

The second half saw us compete more in key areas. Barker started to take a grip on the middle and Perry was causing them problems. Simon made good progress at times, yet his final ball often failed to impact. We still seemed edgy and lacking composure.

A couple of corners came our way and Kev Friend reacted first in the area to kick start us. A forced change by Highfield in the middle affected their game, and we grew in belief. Still not too convincing, yet more willing to chase and work. A Barker free kick dropped over a bemused keeper to bring us level and a fine run by Simon was topped off by his effort looping in under the bar to put us in front with just 3 minutes to go – a 3-2 win in the end.

Manager Dale awarded MOM to Perry in a game that was far more of a problem than the players expected. Highfield deserved something from this, and there were some warnings for our lads today – taking note of those warnings now may well prove more valuable than the 3 points come May!

Kennington  8

Ashford Cavaliers  2

Sunday 26th October – Big Man reports from Sandyacres.

Today we faced off against high flying old rivals Kennington. The opening 25 minutes saw us hold our own, creating chances and playing the sort of football we know we are capable of. Indeed the game may well have been different had Duncan’s superb effort after a flowing move gone in rather than hitting the bar. It was, however, Kennington who broke the deadlock and then soon added a second – both well worked goals involving killer passes. The hosts grabbed a third just before half time – the teams were closer than that!

At HT, we spoke about doing the simple things more and talking more (Things we have said many times before!) Yet within ten minutes of the restart, Kennington had deservedly increased their lead, and as with previous weeks, our heads dropped alarmingly quickly – not helped by having to reshuffle the defence to accommodate an injury to Steve Adz. (The ref said there was no contact – the 4 inch deep gash to the shin suggests otherwise!). Kennington upped the tempo and began to tear us apart, racing into an 8 goal lead.

Two late strikes were no more than consolation efforts – a quality deft strike by Stu Reakes and a calm finish from Dunc after a good move. Without anyone standing head and shoulders above the rest, Man of the match went to Fred Ruby.

We turned out with just 7 regulars – so a huge thank you to reserve lads Stu Reakes, Kev Friend, Jo Wilcox and Chris Wilkins for coming along to endure the mayhem.

There were times in this game when we played some good football and created chances. But doing so in spits & spats is not going to be good enough to keep this side playing Premier league football (which I believe we should be) next season. Next up, we welcome current Champions Market Hotel to Goldwyn. These are the times when certain individuals need to show some character and commitment to the club and start producing the results that I still believe will kick start our season.

Ashford Cavaliers Res  11

Man Of Kent  1

Sunday 19th October – Reece reports from Goldwyn.

The Reserves welcomed new side Man Of Kent to Goldwyn, with the form book suggesting a home win. We began the game well, putting the visitors under lots of pressure – an early strike by Dougie was ruled out. A mistake the other end saw MOK take the lead. This helped kick start us, as we drew level within minutes, Dougie on side! Stu added soon after to put us in front, and we never looked back.

Complacency was setting in – a nasty collision between Joe and the impressive James was the result of not calling a name! Matty G soon calmed things, finding the net from a Barker thru ball. A good HT chat seemed to work as we were looking sharp at the restart. Another good delivery from a corner found Stu who hit his second, our fourth. Matty G claimed his second just moments later to make it 5 – with 40 still to play!

Joe and Aidy worked well preventing the visitors efforts from wide. Five became six and then seven, thanks to two well worked team goals – Dougie and Matty G ending both. A similar team goal followed, possibly one of the goals of the season, as Stu slotted home to make it 8.

Subs came on, and the pressure continued. Stu earned us a penalty – Matty G fired it home for 9. Both Kevin and Mark found themselves wandering forward – normally a worry – but the cushion was just about enough! Stu was then unselfish, playing in Perry to grab a goal, number 10.

Even at 10 – 1, we still managed a five minute panic spell, with Robbins and Clokey clearing things up. A clearance up field found Stu, who hit the net, rounding off an 11-1 win.

A good win with lots of positives. Some petulant chat towards to referee was the only sour point. Man of the match went to James, displaying cool touches and vision. We now leave league action for a while, with a week off next week and cup action the following week. Well done to all.

The Crusader  5

Ashford Cavaliers  3

(Bodkin Cup)

Sunday 12th October – Big Man reports from Willesborough

Even with some key players missing, the firsts had enough on show to deal with our division 2 hosts and we looked bright in the opening exchanges, playing some good football, causing the lower league side problems. The returning Nick Rowe found the net, only to be ruled out for a push. Our inability to clear the ball was then punished as we fell behind to a quality strike. Nick then headed home to level the score.

We then failed to deal with simple through balls again – twice – and found ourselves 1-3 down at the break. Our current lack of confidence and composure then became very evident! The second half saw a similar pattern, with us playing some good stuff on the floor yet failing to deal with fairly harmless, yet direct play from Crusader. This resulted in conceding a fourth.

We began to play a bit and two good strikes from Steve Adz got us back to 3-4, until another lapse saw us go down 3-5. We must offer congratulations to Crusader, who deserve their win through belief and hard work and we wish them well in the next round.

I don’t like to be too negative, but I feel this was the worst display I have seen from a Cavaliers team in a long time. Lack of composure and passion was clear for all to see. The good point was the return of Stu Allan – let’s hope he stays fit. Finally, a big thank you to Nick, Tino and Skip for putting on the boots to help us out when short, rather than raiding the Reserve side and affecting their cup hopes.

Brabourne  0

Sunday 12th October – Dale reports from Goldwyn.

The Reserves welcomed Brabourne to Goldwyn, not knowing quite what to expect after the visitors good win last week. We began quite scrappily, yet still made a couple of good chances. We finally took the lead as Dougie slotted home. The game never really improved, even though we found ourselves 2 up thanks to Simon Farrell scoring an early contender for goal of the season.

The second half was a little better with us taking control of the game, looking dangerous every time went used the flanks. Dougie popped up for his second to extend the lead to 3-0.

With 20 to go, we replaced the hard working Cookie with Wilko. This turned out to be a good decision – with Wilko opening his account for the season with 2 calmly taken finishes to wrap the game up 5-0.

My MOM goes to Jo Wilcox, he got through enough work to complete two 10k races – and linked well with Simon on our left side.

Market Hotel  4

(Charity Trophy)

Sunday 05th October – Big Man reports from Goldwyn

The bare eleven took to the field at Goldwyn on a miserable morning as we played host to current leaders Market Hotel in the opening round of the Ashford Charity Trophy. Yet again, it was a new look Cavalier side and spirits were high as we began the tie well, playing some good passing football, something we’ve not done much of in recent weeks! Even with a good start, it was our visitors who took the lead. Yet we continued playing some good stuff, as we had earlier in the half, and finished the half possibly the stronger side, unlucky not to be level at the break.

We began the second half in a similar fashion to how we ended the first – matching our opponents for effort and ability. Unfortunately, a hand ball by Tim Galloway earned him a red card and allowed Market to extend the lead from the resulting penalty. Being a cup game, we pushed forward in an attempt to salvage something, only for Market to exploit the gaps and score a further two goals, as we went out 0-4.

Despite the result, we played well and, in my opinion, put in our best display of the season so far. Man Of The Match went to Dux, and other performances to note include Paul Allan, Fred Ruby and Kevin Friend.

Looking forward, if we can continue to show this level of determination and work ethic, I see no reason why we can’t turn the poor start to the season around and begin to enjoy our football again.

Charing Res  3

Ashford Cavaliers Reserves  6

Sunday 05th October – Dale reports from Charing.

The Reserves went off to Charing with only captain Kev Friend missing – he was on loan to the first team – so we had five subs to pick from! Quite rare in division four I guess, but it demonstrates our competition for places at the moment. After the ongoing confusion with the referee situation in this league (there wasn’t one!) was sorted, we began the game well against a side who had picked up some good points recently. We took the lead through Clokey, yes Clokey our goal keeper! A long clearance which bounced over the head of his opposite number. We continued to dominate the half, with Dougie scoring a brace as his improvement continues to gather pace, and a very hard working Stu Reakes grabbing another.

The second half was much the same as the first as we continued to dictate things. We missed several chances, yet still took the lead to 6-1 as Stu finished off some good work to get his second and Cookie from the bench put away a good corner from Gomez. As with previous weeks, we manage to switch off and find reason to panic – resulting in conceding two late goals.

Still, it’s another three points, and a good display which saw Stu Reakes picking up the MOM. My thanks to my Dad for stepping in and looking after things while I took the whistle for a half. Also, nice to see you all there looking keen (and wet!). My job will now get tougher as Kevin will be back and young Reece will be available in three weeks. I need to decide who to select as my 16, never mind my starting 11 – but it’s a nice problem.

Bromley Green  4

Ashford Cavaliers  1

(Kent Premier Cup)

Sunday 28th September – Skip’s view at the Swan Ground

The first team entered the Kent Cup this year on the back of a poor run with morale at an all time low – so knowing the travel home wouldn’t be an issue was pleasing. The tie paired two sides lacking in form and numbers, so progress wasn’t expected or possibly welcomed by either! That aside, the game was played in a good spirit with both sides putting in the effort.

From Cavaliers view, it was nice to have no moaning or pointless criticism as we used the game to try a new system and look at a couple of things. Although we never disgraced ourselves, or became terribly over run, the result was a fair reflection as Green enjoyed a lot of possession and used it well. To be honest, our work and movement off the ball was poor which handed the initiative to the hosts.

We took the lead thanks to Cheesy glancing in a delivery, although that just seemed to kick start Green to an equaliser. We soon fell behind as we failed to clear in our area – this was repeated too often. Tommy saved well several times, but wasn’t too keen on the new system! Jake put in a good shift as usual and new club captain Pat Law took our Man of the match award. Quinny and Cheesy put in pleasing shows as well. Sadly there are two or three who are way off the pace needed to turn this poor run around.

On the whole, a little step in the right direction. With Paul back next week and another striker coming in, the quality available is sufficient.

Exel  5

(Kent Junior Trophy)

Sunday 28th September – Dale reports from Goldwyn.

The Reserves played host to Maidstone side Exel in the Kent Junior Trophy. We began the game with a few missing through work etc, and with me changing a few things to give everyone a chance – I really wish I hadn’t as we went two down inside ten minutes! After settling down, Matty G cut in from the right and fired us back in to it from 25 yds. As with previous games, we fell asleep straight away to go 1-3 down. Then 1-4 as we got caught for pace.

Cookie surged forward and won us a penalty which was coolly converted by Matty G. But guess what happened next – yep, conceded yet again, going in 2-5 at HT.

After a loud and angry team talk, our second half was better. We made changes and introduced two subs. With 25 mins remaining, a good through ball from Barker found Stu Reakes who calmly slotted home and with time running out Matty G completed his hat trick from the spot. With seconds remaining, Matt then missed a glorious chance to send it to extra time.

We went down 4-5 in a game that we learnt a lot from – Kevin Friend collecting MOM, leading by example. Now we look to the important competitions.

Ashford Cavaliers  3

Bliby  6

Sunday 21st September – Skip’s view from Goldwyn

The first team showed very little passion against Aldington on the opening day, yet managed somehow to show even less today against a very capable Bliby side. Now that Bliby have their better players available, and continue with them, I fully expect them to challenge Market for the title. A display of passion, control and belief resulted in a deserved victory.

We, on the other hand, played well for the opening 15, then simply imploded. We conceded, did well to reply thanks again to Jake, then conceded again before the break. Our current lack of confidence became evident from that point onwards.

A half time verbal attack on each other may have cleared the air, but that’s all. Encouragement did not come from the desired areas and the second half display was pretty dire. Bliby exploited our in-house problems and raced into a 1-6 lead. Two late goals, one from Jake and one from Davies, made the final score of 3-6 look a little better, but only really papered over the cracks!

Similar squad to last season, yet a worrying dip in form, passion and belief this time around. People need to step up and take on the challenge – as we did last year! Davies took MOM, and others to stand out were Paul and Jake, with Cheesy just about worth a mention. We’re better than this…

Ashford Spartans  3

Ashford Cavaliers Res  4

Sunday 21st September – Dale reports from Willesborough.

The Reserves travelled to Spartans with them already having played two and winning two, so we knew this would be tough. Spartans began the better side and missed a very good chance to take the lead. Yet, before we knew much about it, we had a two goal lead ourselves – Matty G calmly slotting home a penalty and the now prolific Doug Robson added our second.

However, as with last week, we switched off and found ourselves 2-3 down. One being a dubious penalty and the other two were long balls over the top of our defence. During the half time break we had a good chat and agreed what needed doing, and it worked. Clokie didn’t have a single save to make as we became much the better side in the second half

We got our reward and equalised when Mark Stringer won the ball in the middle, drifted forward, and chipped in to Farrell who headed on to Doug who tucked the ball home. The winner came with just 13 minutes remaining. Quick thinking by Brennen with a free kick saw Doug complete his hat trick as it finished 4-3 in our favour. Played two, won two – teams may well start to ‘step up’ against us now!

A special mention for referee Keith Clover – Keith offered to ref the game as no official was available, again! He did so in a fair & honest way and was consistent towards both sides.

Bliby Res  2

Sunday 14th September – Reece reports from Goldwyn

The Reserves kicked off in glorious sunshine against new boys Bliby Reserves. With several probable starters missing, it was an unexpected line up that got us under way. The leagues desire to have more fixtures than refs meant Skip took the whistle – something the visitors never quite got to grips with even though they were in agreement!

The first half saw Cavaliers waste several clear chances in front of goal, and in fairness, Bliby looked quick and dangerous on the attack. The back line dealt with most things well – Clokey benefiting from the ‘older heads’ in front of him as he showed improving confidence. The midfield had its work cut out against a tall side. Dunc from the firsts looked assured, and Barker worked hard enough to pick up the managers MOM award. We went in at the break with a 1-0 lead, thanks to Dougie, although it could have been 5 against a side who were saving their best touches for the attacking third of the field.

The restart saw the lead extended courtesy of Dougie again, and the visitors’ heads began to drop, even though their vocal input didn’t! Goals three and four soon followed from Matty G and a quality effort from Barker, as the Bliby defence were left stranded against the pace of our fitter & younger lads.

A mad 5 minutes saw 4-0 become 4-2 - arguably a fair reward for their efforts – although the comeback was short lived as Gomez hit number 5 with just seconds remaining. Bliby Reserves look capable of hurting sides going forward and a little more pace and chat at the back will make them very hard to beat.

So 5-2 winners to kick us off – some positives and some concerns. Some good displays, some good players waiting to come in – it all promises to be an interesting few weeks ahead!

Aldington  3

Ashford Cavaliers  1

Sunday 07th September – Skip reports from Aldington

The opening day of a season rarely offers much indication as to what the future season has in store, and I hope today follows suit! This time last year we took a point on our first day which possibly surprised a few – today we were maybe expected to win – it’s a new type of challenge for us. Although we began and ended the first half brightly, dropping off the pace mid half allowed us to concede, a pattern that may well be repeated over the coming months if we don’t step up to the challenge. We went in at the break level, thanks to Jake glancing in a delivery from Fred.

At HT we spoke about keeping things simple and playing more football. For whatever reason, we never really competed after the restart, and, at best, stayed with our hosts. An unchecked run of fifty yards from the hosts centre half led to Aldington taking the lead – a position we never looked like recovering from. Getting caught forward resulted in another goal, as we went down 1-3.

Aldington finished the game worthy winners – Crust, Janes and Daniels standing out. From Cavaliers point of view, Paul Allan (straight from the airport!) took Man of the Match. Other good displays came from Tommo, Dux, Cheesy and Jake, with Fred enjoying a good opening 45.

Most were quick to point fingers away from themselves after the game. The reality is we simply need to work together more and do as we are asked to do for the team!

In all, a disappointing attitude led to the disappointing result – we move on.
